Joyce Tenneson: A Life in Photography PDF
By:
Published on 2008-04-22 by Bulfinch

Joyce Tenneson is one of the leading photographers of her generation. Her work is published regularly in magazines worldwide, including Time, LIFE, Esquire, Newsweek, and The New York Times Magazine. She is the author of ten books, including the bestselling Wise Women. Through her workshops and lectures, Tenneson has made a tremendous impact on thousands of professional and amateur photographers. This is the first retrospective overview of Tenneson's thirty years in photography, showcasing her best work from the series Flower Portraits, Light Warriors, Illuminations, Wise Women, Amazing Men, and Intimacy, as well as unknown early photographs, self-portraits, and writings. Tenneson's portraits go beyond a surface recording of her subjects' likenesses. Her signature images -- studio portraits that wrap the sitter in an ethereal glow -- attempt to show the inner person behind the facade. |I want to allow others to reveal and celebrate aspects of themselves that are usually hidden,| Tenneson has said. Joyce Tenneson: 30 Years in Photography will be an illuminating walk through the life and work of a unique talent in contemporary photography.

Fully Exposed PDF
By:Emmanuel Cooper
Published on 2013-05-13 by Routledge

Fully Exposed is a pioneering cultural history of the photography of the male nude which sets the photographer and the model within our cultural and historical perceptions and prejudices. This second edition extends the book's coverage so that the story from the beginnings of the medium to the present day is complete. Fully Exposed is lavishly illustrated with over two hundred and fifty photographs, many of them new to this edition. Different chapters discuss how the male nude has been used by artists, the way it has been treated in the popular press,in relation to British colonialism and scientific ideology. It also discusses `private pictures' taken at home or acquired as erotic material by the private collector. A final chapter brings the book up-to-date and discusses the male nude in the nineties. The combination of art criticism and photographic essay make this an unusual and important book both for academics and the general reader.

Photocinema PDF
By:Neil Campbell,Alfredo Cramerotti,Huw Davies,Jane Fletcher
Published on 2013 by Intellect Books

Taking as its starting point the notion of photocinema—or the interplay of the still and moving image—the photographs, interviews, and critical essays in this volume explore the ways in which the two media converge and diverge, expanding the boundaries of each in interesting and unexpected ways. The book's innovative approach to film and photography produces what might be termed a hybrid “third space,” where the whole becomes much more than the sum of its individual parts, encouraging viewers to expand their perceptions to begin to understand the bigger picture. The latest edition in Intellect's Critical Photography series, Photocinema represents a nuanced theoretical and practical exploration of the experimental cinematic techniques exemplified by artists like Wim Wenders and Hollis Frampton. In addition to new critical essays by Victor Burgin and David Campany, the book includes interviews with Martin Parr, Hannah Starkey, and Aaron Schumann, and a portfolio of photographs from various new and established artists.

The Wallace Collection's Pictures PDF
By:Stephen Duffy,Jo Hedley,Wallace Collection (London, England)
Published on 2004 by Unicorn Press

The Wallace Collection opened to the public as a national museum in 1900. It has acted as a catalyst for enthusiastic collectors and provided a rich source of research for art historians. The pictures in particular have long been regarded not only as one of the most important collections in the world, but also as one of the best loved. Collected between the 1780s and the 1880s by successive generations of the Marquesses of Hertford and the 4th Marquess's illegitimate son, Sir Richard Wallace, the picture collection exhibits a unique character of leisured opulence seasoned with an exquisite sensuality. Today there are 775 paintings, drawings and watercolours to be seen at Hertfeld House, including some of the most famous images of European art such as Hals's The Laughing Cavalier and Fragonard's The Swing. In England the Wallace Colection's array of Old Master paintings is surpassed only by those in the National Gallery and the Royal Collection, while the collections of French painting of the eighteenth century and the period 1820-60 are rivalled only by the greatest collections in France and Russia. Here, for the first time in the Collection's history, all its pictures are reproduced together in colour, with the latest information concerning their attribution. In addition, insight is afforded into the collecting history and motivations of the Seymour-Conway family who amassed one of the greatest of all private collections and whose personalities helped to shape the distinct character the Wallace Collection has today.

Staging the Archive PDF
By:Ernst van Alphen
Published on 2014-11-15 by Reaktion Books

Dedicated to art practices that mobilize the model of the archive, Staging the Archive demonstrates the ways in which such “archival artworks” probe the possibilities of what art is and what it can do. Through a variety of media, methodologies and perspectives, the artists surveyed here also challenge the principles on which the notions of organization, evidence, and documentation are built. The earliest examples of the modern archival artwork were made in the 1930s, but only since the 1960s have artists really embraced archival principles to inform, structure, and shape their works. This includes practices that consist of archive construction, archaeological investigation, record keeping, and the use of archived materials, but also interrogations of the principles, claims, and effects of the archive. Staging the Archive shows how artists read the concept of the archive against the grain, questioning not only what the archive is and can be but what materials, images, or ideas can be archived. Ernst van Alphen examines these archival artists and artworks in detail, setting them within their social, political, and aesthetic contexts. Exploring the works of Marcel Duchamp, Marcel Broodthaers, Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Fiona Tan, and Sophie Calle, among others, he reveals how modern and contemporary artists have used and contested the notion of the archive to establish new relationships to history, information, and data.

Published on 2009-07-01 by Berg

Since its introduction in 1839, photography has become part of everyday life, a position consolidated by the recent development of digital imaging and manipulation. Used to confirm identity, to sell products, to reshape the real, to visualize the news, to record and communicate the personal moment, and as an art form in its own right, photography is now one of the most accessible and pervasive of media. Photography: The Key Concepts provides an ideal guide to the place of photography in our society and to the extraordinary range of photographic genres. Outlining the history of photography and explaining the body of theory which has built up around its use, the book guides the reader through the genres of documentary, portraiture, landscape, still life, art and global photography. Illustrated with a range of historical and contemporary images and case material, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in photography.

Colonial photography and exhibitions PDF
By:Anne Maxwell
Published on 2000 by Leicester Univ Press

This book investigates the historical practice of producing stereotyped spectacles of colonized peoples at the great exhibitions and in colonial photography, and relates it to the shaping of European and settler identities. In doing so, it singles out the homogeneous aspects of colonialism's culture as well as distinguishing its discontinuities. By comparing the images produced in Britain and France with those produced in North America, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, Japan, and China, it proposes that differences in representations of colonized peoples between the imperial centres and the colonies were the result of different social and political agendas. By focusing on the images connected to anthropology, dying race theory, travel, tourism, and portraiture, Maxwell argues that while some photographs were directed at naturalizing the precept of colonialism, others were used to criticize it and to empower indigenous subjects. Written from a postcolonial perspective, and pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, this book will be of interest to scholars, students, and researchers intent on knowing more about the images of racial and cultural difference that shaped our immediate past.\u003e
